What is a Leased Line, and Do You Need One?

A leased line is a dedicated, uncontended fibre connection between your business and the internet. Unlike standard broadband (FTTC, FTTP) which is shared between hundreds of premises, a leased line is yours alone, the bandwidth you pay for is the bandwidth you get, every second of every day.

The other big difference: leased lines are symmetric. A 1Gbps leased line gives you 1Gbps download and 1Gbps upload. Standard broadband is wildly asymmetric, typically 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up, which falls apart the moment you start running cloud backups, video calls or hosted phone systems alongside normal browsing.

You probably need a leased line if any of the following apply: you've moved to cloud services, you run a VoIP phone system, you have 20+ staff on Teams calls daily, your business depends on internet uptime, or you've been quoted a rebuild cost for an outage.

Speeds, SLAs and What You're Actually Buying

Leased lines come in two flavours: EFM (Ethernet First Mile, copper-based, max ~20Mbps) which is largely legacy now, and EAD/EoFTTP (Ethernet Access Direct over fibre) which is what we recommend. Speeds typically range from 100Mbps to 10Gbps symmetric.

Crucially, you're not just buying bandwidth, you're buying the service level agreement:

  • Uptime guarantee, Typically 99.95–99.99%, with credits if breached
  • Mean Time To Repair (MTTR), Usually 5–6 hours for fibre faults, vs days for standard broadband
  • Proactive monitoring, The carrier monitors the circuit 24/7 and often spots faults before you do
  • Static IP block, You get a /29 or larger as standard, useful for VPNs, mail servers and firewall rules

Standard broadband, by comparison, has no meaningful SLA, when it goes down you join the queue with everyone else.

How We Quote and Install

Leased line pricing depends almost entirely on how far your premises are from the nearest fibre exchange and which carriers serve your postcode. We run quotes across multiple carriers (Openreach, Virgin Media Business, Colt, TalkTalk Business, Zen) and present you the best two or three options, not just the first quote that comes back.

Typical timeline: quote in 5 working days, order placed, survey within 2–4 weeks, installation within 60–90 days (most of that is Openreach build time, which is outside our control). For urgent situations we can often arrange a temporary 4G/5G failover circuit while the leased line is being built.

For business-critical sites we recommend a resilient pair, two leased lines from different carriers, taking diverse paths into the building, with automatic failover. More expensive, but if your business stops when the internet stops, it pays for itself the first time a digger hits a cable down the road.

What's Included

Symmetric Speeds 100Mbps–10Gbps

Same upload as download, what you pay for is what you get, 24/7, uncontended.

99.95%+ Uptime SLA

Proper service guarantees with financial credits if breached, not best-effort consumer broadband.

5-6 Hour Fix Time

Carrier-grade MTTR with proactive monitoring, most faults detected before you notice.

Multi-Carrier Quotes

We quote across Openreach, Virgin Business, Colt and others, best price and route, not just first answer.

Static IP Block Included

/29 or larger as standard, ready for VPNs, hosted services and proper firewall configuration.

Resilient Failover Options

Optional second carrier with diverse routing for sites that can't afford to be offline.

FAQ

Business Leased Lines & Dedicated Internet, FAQs

Typically 60–90 working days from order to live, with the bulk of that being the Openreach civil works (digging, blowing fibre). For premises already served by fibre it can be faster. We'll give you a realistic timeline at quote stage.

Pricing varies massively by location and required speed, from around £200/month for a 100Mbps connection in a fibre-rich area up to £1,000+/month for high-bandwidth circuits in poorly-served postcodes. There's also a one-off install charge that may be partly subsidised by Openreach.

It depends. FTTP is a big improvement on FTTC and is fine for many smaller businesses. But FTTP is still contended, asymmetric and has no SLA. If uptime matters, or you're running VoIP/cloud workloads heavily, a leased line is still the right answer.

Yes, we can deploy a 4G or 5G router as a temporary connection while the leased line is being built. We can also keep that 4G connection in place afterwards as automatic failover for when the main line drops.

Provider-assigned IP addresses are not portable between carriers. If you're moving providers you'll get a new IP block. We handle the cutover (DNS changes, firewall rules, mail server records) so the transition is invisible to your team.
