What is a Technology Risk Assessment?
A technology risk assessment is a structured review of your IT environment to identify vulnerabilities, single points of failure, compliance gaps, and operational risks. It's not about selling you security products, it's about giving you an honest picture of where your business is exposed.
At LeapIT, we assess risks across five key areas: cyber security, business continuity, regulatory compliance, operational resilience, and technology debt. The output is a prioritised risk register with clear recommendations and cost estimates for mitigation.
For Birmingham businesses in regulated sectors, legal, finance, healthcare, a formal risk assessment is often a regulatory requirement. For everyone else, it's simply good business practice.
What We Assess
Our risk assessment covers the full spectrum of technology risk:
- Cyber Security Risks, Vulnerability scanning, penetration testing readiness, email security, endpoint protection, and access controls
- Business Continuity, Backup and disaster recovery testing, single points of failure, recovery time objectives
- Compliance Gaps, GDPR, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, industry-specific regulations
- Technology Debt, End-of-life hardware, unsupported software, legacy systems that create risk
- Operational Risks, Key-person dependencies, documentation gaps, vendor lock-in
- Third-Party Risks, Supply chain security, SaaS provider resilience, data processing agreements
Every risk is scored by likelihood and impact, giving you a clear picture of what needs urgent attention and what can be addressed over time.
From Assessment to Action
A risk register is only useful if you act on it. We don't just identify problems and leave, we help you fix them. Each recommendation includes:
- Clear description of the risk and its potential business impact
- Recommended mitigation with realistic cost estimates
- Priority level based on likelihood and severity
- Timeline for implementation
This feeds directly into your IT strategy and roadmap, ensuring risk mitigation is built into your ongoing technology plan, not treated as a one-off project.
We also offer annual reassessments to track progress and identify new risks as your business and the threat landscape evolve.

Technology Risk Assessment, FAQs
We recommend a comprehensive assessment annually, with lighter reviews quarterly. If you make significant changes to your infrastructure, have a security incident, or enter a new regulatory environment, an ad-hoc assessment is also worthwhile.
No, though penetration testing may form part of it. A risk assessment is broader, it covers business continuity, compliance, operational risks, and technology debt as well as technical security. We can include penetration testing if appropriate.
Cyber Essentials itself has a defined scope, but a broader risk assessment helps you understand risks beyond what Cyber Essentials covers. For Cyber Essentials Plus, we include the technical audit as part of our assessment process.
A detailed risk register, an executive summary for leadership, and a prioritised remediation roadmap with cost estimates. Everything is presented in plain English, no jargon-heavy reports that only IT people can understand.
