Independent cyber security advice, on a defined engagement
Cyber security consultancy is an expert assessment of where your business is exposed, and a clear, prioritised plan to fix it. It's a defined piece of work with a start, a finish and a written deliverable, rather than an open-ended managed service. You get an honest view of your current security posture, a roadmap you can actually use, and the freedom to act on it however you want.
It's the right starting point for businesses that want an independent view of their security, for teams facing a specific compliance requirement, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, a client or insurer questionnaire, and for leaders who suspect there are gaps but don't know where to look. Because we're not trying to sell a long-term contract on the back of the engagement, the assessment is genuinely independent.
LeapIT is a Cyber Essentials Plus, ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 certified provider based near Solihull. Our consultants explain risk in plain English, not scare tactics, and write findings the way leadership teams actually need to read them. We're well known to compliance-heavy sectors including legal firms and finance and accountancy practices across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.
What our cyber security consultancy covers
We tailor the scope to your business and the reason for the engagement. A typical assessment touches most of the areas below.
Security risk assessment and gap analysis
A structured review of your people, processes and technology against current threat patterns, so you know exactly where the gaps are and which ones matter most.
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus readiness
Pre-assessment, remediation plan and hands-on guidance to get you certified, whether you've never been through it before or you're recovering from a failed attempt.
Compliance guidance
Practical advice on ISO 27001 controls, GDPR technical and organisational measures, and sector requirements such as SRA, Lexcel, FCA and supplier security questionnaires.
Microsoft 365 and cloud security review
A focused review of your Microsoft 365 tenant, Azure resources and SaaS estate, identity, conditional access, sharing, backup and tenant hardening against current attacker tradecraft.
Incident response planning
A written, rehearsed plan covering who does what when something goes wrong, containment, communications, evidence preservation, recovery and post-incident review.
Security awareness and staff training strategy
A pragmatic plan for raising staff awareness, phishing simulation cadence, onboarding training, role-specific guidance for finance and exec teams, and reporting.
Board-level reporting and prioritised action plan
Findings written for the people who sign things off, clear risks, costed remediations, sensible priorities and a roadmap your leadership team can actually use.
How a consultancy engagement works
A simple, defined process so you always know where you are and what's next.
Scoping call
A free, no-obligation conversation to understand your business, the concern that prompted the call, and any compliance deadlines or client requirements driving the timeline.
Assessment
A structured review of your systems, configuration, policies and exposure, combining technical inspection (Microsoft 365, network, endpoint, identity) with policy and process review.
Findings report
A written report with prioritised, plain-English recommendations. Each finding includes the risk, the fix, an effort estimate and where it sits on a sensible roadmap.
Optional ongoing support
If you want us to implement and manage the fixes afterwards, we can, but you're under no obligation. The report is yours either way.
Consultancy vs managed cyber security
We offer both, and they solve genuinely different problems. Here's the honest distinction.
Cyber Security Consultancy
A defined assessment and plan. You get an independent expert view of where you are, what the risks are, and what to do about them, written up as a report you own.
- Fixed scope and fixed price
- Written findings and roadmap
- No obligation to continue with us
Managed Cyber Security
Ongoing day-to-day protection. We deploy and run the controls, monitor for threats, respond to incidents, and keep your defences current under a fixed monthly fee.
- 24/7 threat monitoring
- Incident response on standby
- Continuous, not project-based
In practice, many clients start with a consultancy engagement to get an honest picture of where they stand, then move to managed cyber security once they've decided how to take the recommendations forward, but plenty of clients take the report and run with it themselves. Both are fine.
Independent cyber security advice, written for the people who sign things off.
Fixed-scope engagements. Plain-English reporting. No obligation to take on ongoing services.
Who cyber security consultancy is for
Most of our consultancy engagements come from one of three triggers.
An independent second opinion
Your team or current IT provider tells you you're "secure", and you'd like an independent expert to verify that, before you find out the hard way.
A compliance requirement
A client, insurer or regulator is asking for Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001 alignment, or a completed security questionnaire, and you need to get it right first time.
Suspected gaps
You suspect there are weaknesses in how your business is set up, but don't know where they are or which ones actually matter. We find out and tell you, in priority order.
Cyber Security Consultancy, FAQs
The questions we're asked most often before a consultancy engagement.
A cyber security consultant independently assesses where your business is exposed to cyber risk, identifies the specific weaknesses in your systems, processes and people, and recommends a prioritised set of fixes. They also support compliance work, Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, GDPR technical measures, insurer or client security questionnaires, and translate technical findings into something a leadership team can actually act on. A consultant doesn't have to take over day-to-day IT management; the value is in the independent expertise and the written plan.
It depends on the size of your business, the complexity of your systems and the scope of the engagement, a Cyber Essentials readiness review for a 15-person business is very different from a full ISO 27001 gap analysis for a regulated firm. After a free scoping call we provide a clear fixed quote, so you know the cost up front. There is no obligation to take on ongoing services afterwards.
Cyber security consultancy is typically a defined project, scope, assessment, written report and a prioritised action plan, with a clear start and finish. Many clients then choose to move to our managed cyber security service so we can implement and run the controls day to day, but that's optional and entirely up to you.
Yes. We run a readiness assessment against the current Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus controls, give you a remediation plan for anything that wouldn't pass, and support you through the certification itself. We're Cyber Essentials Plus certified ourselves, so we know exactly what the assessors look for.
No. The consultancy engagement stands alone, you get the findings report and the prioritised action plan, and you're free to act on it however you choose, whether that's using your in-house team, your existing IT provider, or a different supplier. We're happy to be measured on the quality of the advice, not on locking you in.
